CAD Technologies

c. a. d. technologies

Using CAD technologies is a great way to combine technical skills of both the digital and physical worlds, to create beautiful pieces. I am a firm believer that processes by hand are essential to understand, even as a digital artist, because this in turn helps to understand how to “see” within the digital world. Below is a compilation of works that showcases my knowledge of combining digital and physical work, including digital drawing, laser cutting, 3D printing, and mold making.

“Mandala Tiles”

First, I drew this design within Rhino. I then exported it out to a laser cutter, and had it cut the design into a piece of acrylic. This was then used to "stamp" tiles out of clay, which were then fired in the kiln. Unfortunately, many of the final tiles were destroyed in the kiln, but this project was still an incredibly valuable experience in terms of being able to learn and understand the process.

“From 3D Image to Ceramic Art”

This was a project that combined the digital and the physical. I first 3D modeled this hand in Maya, and then exported it to Rhino. In Rhino, I modeled what would be the 2-part mold to make sure it was worked out correctly for the model. I then 3D printed the hand. This 3D print then became what I used to create the mold. I built clay around the first piece, then poured the slip I mixed, then waited for it to set. Then the process was repeated for the second part.

Finally, I ended up with a giant clay hand. I then Raku-fired it, and the result of the final ceramic piece is shown in the video at right above.
